The purchase of Alaska
Was this a good purchase?
This political cartoon discusses the purchase of Alaska from Russia. The message of the issue is that the United States wasted money on a chunk of ice. It also shows the Russians running off with the money. Other views were that it was a good thing that we bought Alaska from Russia because it is important to expand the United States. The techniques that the author has used is labeling and symbolism. An example of labeling is the wheelbarrow that says "treaty" and the chunk of ice says "Russian American" which means that the Russians that live in Alaska would be given full American citizenship. This cartoon does not support my position on American Imperialism because it is good that the U.S. expands its influences in other parts of the world.
